A clinical psychologist is trained in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders. They hold a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) and must be licensed by state to independently provide services.
When it comes to your health and well-being, it is important to find the right fit in a provider. A clinical psychologist has specialized training in psychological testing, diagnosis, and psychotherapy interventions. They may also be trained researchers and instructors or professors. Psychologists typically do not prescribe medications. If you are interested in taking medication for the treatment of psychological distress, a medical provider such as a psychiatrist or your primary care doctor would be the best place to start.

Telehealth services can be a very convenient, comfortable, and safe way to engage in treatment services when provided through HIPAA-compliant web-based platforms. I use Simple Practice and Sessions by Psychology today, both are HIPAA-compliant.
Unlike a provider who is in your insurance network, as an out-of-network provider, Dr. Hruska does not bill insurance. Many patients prefer the sense of privacy and autonomy they have when they choose to work with an out-of-network provider.

There are several important factors to consider:
1. Credentials and Licensing
Psychologists are licensed by state, which means that the provider must hold an active license in the state in which the patient is located in order to provide clinical services. State licensing boards confirm that a psychologist has met and maintains the necessary educational and professional standards required to provide psychological services in your state. Many telehealth psychologists are licensed in multiple states. Dr. Hruska holds an unrestricted license in NY, and a telehealth-only license in FL.
2. Assess Areas of Specialization and Types of/Years of Experience
If you are able to identify or name the types of symptoms or problems you are experiencing, or if you have some goals for your therapy, look for psychologists who specialize in these areas. Consider searching for broad terms such as “depression,” “depressed mood,” “trauma,” “adhd,” or “perimenopause.”
By training, clinical psychologists are skilled in assessment and diagnosis of symptoms and psychological disorders, and will be able to help you identify and learn about your symptoms. Whether or not you meet the clinical criteria for a psychological disorder (e.g., “major depressive disorder”), psychotherapy can be beneficial.
Dr. Hruska designs individual treatment plans for each patient as a collaborative discussion. In some cases, getting an individual ready to do the work of therapy is the preliminary goal. Your treatment needs to meet your needs and goals, and to be in alignment with the many factors that make you who you are.
3. Consider Cultural Competence and Fit
Successful psychotherapy requires a strong therapeutic relationship. Consider psychologists who understand and respect your cultural background and personal preferences, and who will honor you and your story. Ask yourself what makes you comfortable, and what characteristics are important for you to have in a therapist at this time in your life.
4. Confirm Payment Options or Insurance Coverage
If you will be using insurance, check if the psychologist accepts your insurance plan or offers affordable payment options.
Dr. Hruska offers courtesy claims and superbills for out-of-network reimbursement.
5. Ensure Secure and Confidential Communication
The telehealth platform used should be HIPAA-compliant, safeguarding your privacy and confidentiality.
Dr. Hruska uses video platforms through SimplePractice as well as Sessions by Psychology Today, which are both HIPAA-compliant. Reilly Psychological Health utilizes a Google Workspace business account for HIPAA-compliant emailing, and a secure to ensure the protection of any email correspondence. Dr. Hruska allows private text messaging for established patients to schedule or reschedule appointments, but does not utilize texting for protected information or clinical purposes.

“Fit” is an incredibly important factor. Research demonstrates that feeling comfortable and developing a collaborative, positive, and genuine relationship with a provider is essential to effective psychotherapy. Reach out, read the listings on directories such as Psychology Today, ask for a few consultations with different providers — get a feel for what the treatment would be like. Many therapists, myself included, offer a free consultation to discuss fit, needs, availability, billing, etc. Mental health treatment is an investment, and not all providers, clinics, or therapies are the same.
Occasionally, I meet with a prospective new client and realize I am not able to provide the care they are looking for. I will do my best to provide a referral.
